Today is day 5 and all Xanadu wants to do is sleep. He isn’t much interested in food and it has been tough getting the pills down. I think he is just catching up on some much needed rest. His incision looks great.
Last night, I actually got decent sleep myself, which was so appreciated. He was up only once between 3-4am. I stayed up with him for an hour as he was agitated and trembling. I’m not sure if it was his nerves or if he was in pain. I do think his knees are giving him some trouble. He has ruptured both ACLs in his life and he suffers from arthritis. They have been shaking.
I assume it is normal to sleep so much after this ordeal?
Today was our day 4 and also the sleepiest day. Dakota has a lot of bruising that came up overnight, and this morning I worried that the bruising plus the sleeping meant something bad. I emailed a photo of the bruise to the doctor and she is good with it, so I am also just assuming that healing is exhausting. Sleeping now is very helpful to the humans, too, since it would be awful to try to keep our dogs calm during this time.
When I think of what was actually involved, I’m amazed that these sweet dogs don’t run from us in fear, and I’m grateful that they trust us so much. I think that on day 4 of my leg amputation, I would not be trotting outside to pee, and I’d certainly be sleeping a lot (drugged out of my mind, I imagine).
After five days on medication, lots of sleep can be expected. It does look like Xan is healing quite well!
Yes, sleeping is normal and healing too. Medicinal, as some Tripawds like ETGayle like to say.
A week from now you’ll be wonderin’ why you were so concerned. Hang in there, things will get better!
